When Small Businesses Become Political: My Experience With a Downtown Business Organization

If you own a small business, you expect that local business organizations exist to support entrepreneurs, encourage economic growth, and help create a thriving downtown. Unfortunately, that wasn’t my experience.

As the owner of Deez Mats, I invested my time, money, and energy into becoming part of the local business community. My goal has always been simple: create unique products, participate in community events, and contribute positively to the local economy.

Recently, I was informed that my membership with a downtown business organization in Milford would be revoked.

What has been difficult is not simply the decision itself, but the lack of transparency surrounding it.

I have requested clarification regarding:

  • Who made the decision.

  • Whether the organization’s Board of Directors actually voted.

  • What authority was used to revoke membership.

  • Whether meeting minutes document the action.

  • Which governing bylaws authorize the decision.

These are reasonable questions for any nonprofit organization that represents local businesses and receives support from membership dues and community partnerships.

At the time of writing, I am still seeking those answers.

Why Transparency Matters

Organizations that represent hundreds of local businesses have an obligation to operate fairly and consistently.

Whether someone agrees with me personally should not determine whether my small business has access to networking opportunities, marketing events, or participation in the local business community.

Membership decisions should be based on written policies, NOT personal opinions, rumors, or politics.

If decisions are made behind closed doors without following established procedures, every business owner should be concerned, because today’s decision affecting one business could become tomorrow’s decision affecting another.

Small Businesses Deserve Due Process

Running a small business is already difficult.

Owners invest countless hours creating products, paying taxes, hiring vendors, supporting local charities, and serving customers. Losing access to opportunities because of unclear decision-making can have real financial consequences.

Every business owner deserves:

  • Clear standards.

  • Consistent enforcement.

  • Transparency.

  • An opportunity to respond before adverse decisions are made.

Those principles build trust throughout the business community.

My Commitment to Milford

Despite this experience, I remain committed to serving customers throughout Milford and beyond.

You’ll continue to find Deez Mats at local events, creating custom apparel, custom doormats, and products designed to make people smile. We are currently in talks with multiple stores to carry our products.

I believe Milford is filled with incredible entrepreneurs who genuinely support one another, and I look forward to continuing to collaborate with them.

Why I’m Sharing This

I’m sharing my experience because I believe transparency strengthens communities.

This article is not intended to attack individuals. Instead, I hope it encourages open communication, accountability, and fair treatment for every small business owner.

If additional information becomes available, I will update this article accordingly.

Until then, I will continue asking reasonable questions and advocating for fair processes.
